The Hallucination Problem
General-purpose LLMs are brilliant at generating plausible text — and terrible at knowing when they're wrong. In customer service, a confidently invented "30-day return policy" that doesn't exist becomes a screenshot-backed dispute you can't win.
What RAG Actually Does
Retrieval-Augmented Generation changes the workflow from "generate from memory" to "retrieve, then generate":
- Index your content: Your pages, FAQs and documents are crawled, chunked and embedded into a vector index.
- Retrieve: When a customer asks something, the system finds the most relevant chunks from your knowledge base.
- Constrained generation: The model answers using only the retrieved content.
The result: the AI goes from "willing to say anything" to "speaking only from your documentation." When the knowledge base has no answer, it says so — and offers a human handoff.
Three Rules for Getting RAG Right
- Content quality = answer quality. Your knowledge base must be accurate and current. Policies changed? Update it.
- Coverage matters. Every frequently-asked topic (shipping, sizing, warranty) needs source content.
- Set a confidence threshold. Below it, escalate to a human. Never let the bot guess.
How to Evaluate Any Chatbot Vendor
Ask one question: "What happens when the knowledge base doesn't contain the answer?" If the answer is "it admits it and escalates" — good. If the bot rambles on — walk away.
Our platform ships with RAG built in: crawl your site, add FAQs, upload documents, and set your confidence threshold. Try it with the live widget on our site.
